Could you be an Apple Distinguished Educator?
December 28, 2008 in Apple, Education, Tech by Stephen
I would encourage all of your tech superstars out there to apply!
The Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) program is a relationship program focused on educational excellence and leadership. ADEs are members of a select group of K-12 and Higher Education professionals possessing an identified expertise in educational technology leadership. This group of over 1200 educators spans the globe with membership in the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Latin America, and Asia.
Apple Distinguished Educators fulfill 4 primary roles:
Advocate: ADEs are passionate advocates for the potential of Apple technologies and they provide expert assistance and best practices to peers and policy-makers. ADEs are frequent presenters at local, state and national educational conferences.
Advisor: ADEs provide valuable input to Apple on the realities of integrating instructional technology into learning environments.
Author: ADEs publish authentic work on the Apple Learning Interchange (ALI), such as teaching and leadership best practices, exemplary lesson ideas, and a range of content items that showcase Apple solutions and technologies for the advancement of education.
Ambassadors: ADEs are innovators in building community and capacity for teaching and learning in a global context. Through online projects and collaboration tools, they empower each other to expand the walls of the classroom and bring global experiences to classrooms everywhere.
Playoff Bound!
December 22, 2008 in Georgia, Sports by Stephen
Yes, the Atlanta Falcons are headed to the playoffs. I can’t even tell you how improbable this was considering how things played out last season. They could still wind up winning the division, but I’m just going to savor this for now.
Even though Matt “Ice” Ryan fumbled on this play, the Falcons still recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Yes, it was lucky, but this franchise has endured plenty of bad luck in its history.

Free Wi-Fi spreading like a virus
December 16, 2008 in Tech, Wireless by Stephen
I haven’t felt the need to post much about WiFi lately, mostly because it’s becoming so commonplace. Here is a good update on that.
Fancy UK sandwich shop Pret A Manger announced that it will offer free Wi-Fi at about 170 of its stores across the UK starting today.
And while municipal Wi-Fi is dying an ugly, premature death in the United States, China is working on making the entire city of Beijing a giant free-Wi-Fi hotspot by 2011.
The airlines lately have been rolling out Wi-Fi that is the opposite of free: They charge way too much for it (there are few monopolies as perfect as the provision of wireless networking at 35,000 feet). However, Delta plans to start offering Wi-Fi on its puddle-jumper shuttle flights tomorrow. To promote the new service, they’ll offer the Wi-Fi free for the next two weeks.
Free Wi-Fi is breaking out at gas stations, on buses and even on French “bullet” trains.
Meanwhile, an open source Wi-Fi service called WeFi now claims 10 million hotspots worldwide.
