In December of 1992 I was living in Savannah when I decided to make a trip to the Humane Society to get a kitten. The lady there told me that this calico kitten had been found wandering along Bay Street and needed a home. They had named her Stephanie, but I took her home and decided that I would shorten her name to Steffi, in honor of the great Steffi Graf.
Earlier today I had to take Steffi and have her put to sleep. I’ve had other cats, but Steffi outlasted them all. She was a great cat for almost 15 years, and I will miss her.

My esteemed colleague, Kristina McBride, gave me some grief today about how little I’ve been blogging lately. She’s right, of course. I have been swamped with school work, and my day job has kept me on the road more than usual. I know those sound like flimsy excuses, but they are the best I have. I hope to be able to put a few more things together in the next couple of days in an attempt to make up for it.
Until then, here is a picture of my cat.

I haven’t done one of these in a while, but I couldn’t resist this one!
A stray kitten has found a new mother in a golden retriever, who began producing milk for the little feline after hearing its cries. Honey hadn’t given birth in 18 months, but after her owner, Jimmy Martin, brought home the kitten, she suddenly found herself playing mom.
“She started licking her and loving her. Within a couple of days, Honey started naturally lactating,” said Kathy Martin, Jimmy’s wife. “The kitten took right to her, and she started nursing her.”

I’ll just let you make up your own jokes for this one.
City officials are hoping to harness the power of dog doo. San Franciscans already recycle more than 60 percent of their garbage, but in this dog-friendly town, animal feces make up nearly 4 percent of residential waste, or 6,500 tons a year nearly as much as disposable diapers, according to the city.
Within the next few months, Norcal Waste, a garbage hauling company that collects San Francisco’s trash, will begin a pilot program under which it will use biodegradable bags and dog-waste carts to pick up droppings at a popular dog park.
The droppings will be tossed into a contraption called a methane digester, which is basically a tank in which bacteria feed on feces for weeks to create methane gas.
The methane could then be piped directly to a gas stove, heater, turbine or anything else powered by natural gas. It can also be used to generate electricity.
