Expect more cities to do the same.
In the first public/private partnership in the United States, Calumet City and Cook County officials have recently installed mobile wireless video cameras at River Oaks Center and other locations in the city.
The interactive technology means officers at computer terminals or via laptops in vehicles can now view streaming video, remotely access high-bandwidth applications and share mission critical data in real time.
According to Chris McKie, spokesman for Cisco, the Calumet City system operates on the new 4.9 GHz band, which was designated exclusively for public safety by the Federal Communications Commission.
“The ‘public safety’ designation and lack of interference from other wireless networks makes the 4.9 GHz technology more secure,” O’Meara said.
